Without The Phantom, the superhero genre may never have gotten off the ground. This iconic pulp hero has been through many evolutions over the decades, and now King Features is reimagining him once more for a new webcomic series called Phantom 2040: A New Shadow.

With the first chapter of Phantom 2040: A New Shadow now live on the Comics Kingdom platform, IGN can exclusively debut a new preview of the series, including character artwork from Chapter 2. Check it out in the slideshow gallery below:

Phantom 2040: A New Shadow is co-written by Alex Segura (Star Wars) and Michael Moreci (Dick Tracy), with art by John Amor (Urban Animal) and editing by Alex Garcia (Eye Lie Popeye). Here's the official logline for the new series:

On September 24, a new Phantom rises in Phantom 2040: A New Shadow, an all-new webcomic series that reimagines the iconic “Ghost Who Walks” for a new generation. In a fractured 2040 ravaged by climate collapse, aimless ex-soccer star Carlos Osorio takes up the mantle of the Phantom to stand up against an ambitious corporate villain— forcing him to become the Ghost Who Walks and fight to save humanity.

Phantom 2040: A New Shadow is an updated take on the original Phantom 2040 animated series, albeit with a different character, Carlos Osorio, under the iconic purple spandex. The animated series originally ran from 1995-1996 and spawned a Marvel Comics tie-in and a video game adaptation.

Phantom 2040: A New Shadow will run 20 chapters in all, with new chapters releasing weekly on Comics Kingdom.

In other comic book news, DC has finally answered the burning question of whether Batman wears socks, and we've got the full scoop on what it means that Norman Osborn has become the new Spider-Man.
