Nintendo capped off its Super Mario Bros. 40th anniversary announcements at the September 2025 Nintendo Direct with the announcement of a brand-new Yoshi game for Nintendo Switch 2 called Yoshi and the Mysterious Book.
The new Yoshi game’s announcement was accompanied not only by the promise of a spring 2026 release date but also a solid look at gameplay, too. It’s a reveal that showed off Yoshi and the Mysterious Book’s art style, a few familiar mechanics, and even some new characters.
“The game takes place within a mysterious book,” Nintendo’s Yoshiaki Koizumi said during the Direct. “You will make discoveries and encounter all sorts of things as you are exploring.”
As Yoshi travels through his new storybook adventure, he'll come across sentient dandelions, frogs that spew out bubbles to ride in, and more. Mr. E, the creatively named talking book, also contains new friends, too, including smiling flowers that can be carried on Yoshi's back and used to bring life to a new world.
Other highlights from the Super Mario Bros. 40th anniversary announcements include the first trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 on Switch 2, and the reveal that Mario Tennis Fever is coming to Switch 2 in 2026.
